Similar to our urban counterparts, many small, rural, and northern hospitals are experiencing system capacity pressures including increasing emergency room visits.
Over the past five years, the DRHC has seen:
- a 6.24% increase in overall visits to the Emergency Room
- a 46.4% increase in Emergency Room visits for mental health and addiction related illnesses.
We’re seeing an epidemic of drug and substance abuse including opioids and more recently (with a larger impact on health and social services), methamphetamine.
Like the DRHC, Ontario hospitals are ready to work with the new government and system partners to streamline processes, remove unnecessary barriers and improve access to care.
