Information about Quality Improvement

In June 2010, the Ontario Government passed the Excellent Care for All Act, 2010. This legislation helps support us to further improve the quality and safety of care provided to members of our community. One of the ways that the Excellent Care for All Act, 2010 is helping us meet our community's expectations regarding quality, patient safety, and accountability is through the public reporting of Quality Improvement Plans (QIP).

Quality improvement is an ongoing priority that helps us continually find new and better ways of doing things so that we can enhance care for patients, increase satisfaction and achieve even better clinical outcomes. A Quality Improvement Plan (QIP) is a formal set of commitments made to our patients, clients, residents, health care providers and community to improve quality through focused targets and actions.

Our Quality Improvement Plan is one tool that we are using to:

  • collaborate with patients, family members and/or caregivers and our Board to identify and develop improvement projects;
  • clearly articulate to our community, patients and staff our focus on creating a safe, positive patient experience;
  • demonstrate our accountability for delivering high quality health care; and
  • help us document and review our current performance in a variety of areas.

How to Read the Quality Improvement Plan

Our Quality Improvement Plan (QIP) is made up of two parts:

QIP Narrative - The QIP Narrative is a document that provides a brief overview of our quality improvement plan, highlighting and listing our hospital's top priorities for the year. The QIP Narrative highlights how we have engaged patients', caregivers' and the community's in our plans and vision for the future, and provides a framework to express what quality improvement objectives, priorities and initiatives will look like in the upcoming year.

QIP Spreadsheet - The QIP Spreadsheet includes our improvement targets and initiatives as well as a core set of indicators that all similar hospitals across the province are working on including hand hygiene, wait-times in emergency, patient satisfaction and finance total margin.

How is the QIP developed?

The Board of Directors for Dryden Regional Health Centre and our Quality and Safety Committee are responsible for overseeing the development of the Quality Improvement Plan. The members of our Board and the Quality Committee work closely with our team (including patients and/or family members and health care professionals) to determine areas where we are doing well and areas where we have room for improvement. From there, we set targets for the organization, which are reflected in the plan.

What timeframe does the QIP cover?

The QIP covers a period of one fiscal year (April 1 - March 31), and while the QIP must contain annual performance targets, it is understood that some improvements take longer than 12 months to achieve. Approved by the Board of Directors, the Quality Improvement Plan is submitted to Health Quality Ontario, the Ministry of Health and Long-Term and the North West Local Health Integration Network (NWLHIN) by April 1st of each year.
