Permanent Full-Time Medical Laboratory Assistant

The Dryden Regional Health Centre is seeking to fill the following position with a highly motivated, team-orientated professional:
The Medical Laboratory Assistant works as part of the Clinical Laboratory team to support the delivery of timely, accurate and high-quality laboratory services. Working under the supervision of a Medical Laboratory Technologist, the MLA performs phlebotomy, specimen collection and processing, point-of-care testing and other laboratory procedures within their scope of competence. The role works closely with patients and other healthcare professionals and contributes to safe, efficient and patient-centred laboratory services.
Responsibilities:
- Perform all aspects of phlebotomy, including venipuncture and capillary blood collection, ensuring accurate patient identification, preparation and specimen labelling.
- Receive, prepare and process laboratory specimens, including centrifugation, separation, aliquoting and distribution for testing.
- Monitor pending laboratory work, retrieve results and track specimens and time-sensitive testing.
- Perform point-of-care procedures within scope, including electrocardiograms, Holter monitoring, glucometer testing, urinalysis and pregnancy testing.
- Prepare reagents and stains and assist with laboratory testing and equipment operation under the supervision of a Medical Laboratory Technologist.
- Set up applicable PCR testing for review and resulting by a Medical Laboratory Technologist.
- Assess referred-in specimens to ensure collection and sample requirements have been met and identify specimens requiring rejection.
- Provide patients, nursing staff and other healthcare providers with appropriate specimen collection instructions and information.
- Maintain laboratory equipment, supplies and inventory and complete routine cleaning, disinfection and quality-control activities.
- Perform clerical and administrative duties including accessioning, filing, answering telephone inquiries, stocking and ordering supplies.
- Prepare specimens for transportation to reference laboratories in accordance with Transportation of Dangerous Goods requirements.
- Participate in accreditation, quality improvement and laboratory safety initiatives.
- Work collaboratively with laboratory staff and other healthcare professionals to support departmental workflow, turnaround times and quality patient care.
Qualifications:
- Graduate of a recognized Medical Laboratory Assistant program.
- Certified Medical Laboratory Assistant.
- Clinical practice experience required; previous experience in a hospital or laboratory setting preferred.
- Demonstrated phlebotomy and blood collection skills.
- Experience with EKG, Holter monitoring and glucose monitoring is considered an asset.
- Current CPR certification.
- Transportation of Dangerous Goods certification and WHMIS training.
- Strong communication, organizational and interpersonal skills.
- Basic computer skills and ability to operate applicable laboratory, cardiology and office equipment.
- Ability to prioritize workload and work effectively in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary environment.
- Proven attendance record.
- Able to perform the essential duties of the job.

This is a unionized position. Compensation will be as per the Collective Agreement, starting at $31.74/hr.
